The Statler Brothers were an American country and gospel vocal group formed in Staunton, Virginia, in 1955. Comprised of lead vocalist Don Reid, his brother Harold Reid, Phil Balsley and Lew DeWitt (later replaced by Jimmy Fortune), the quartet blended rich harmonies and storytelling lyrics. They performed with Johnny Cash from 1964 to 1972 and earned fame with their 1965 hit “Flowers on the Wall,” which won a Grammy, followed by songs like “Bed of Rose’s,” “Do You Know You Are My Sunshine” and “The Class of ’57”. These songs’ simple country melodies and warm harmonies translate well to the ukulele, making them ideal for nostalgic sing‑alongs.
